Why Is Australian Made Often More Expensive?

Short answer:

Importing products from overseas can be much cheaper due to a number of reasons including much lower wages.

More detailed answer:

Overseas manufacturers, particularly in countries with lower labor costs, can produce goods at a fraction of the price. They also often benefit from less stringent regulations around wages, environmental practices, OHS regulations, and quality standards, allowing them to cut costs further. Additionally, imported goods are often produced in massive quantities, taking advantage of economies of scale that reduce per-unit costs.

In contrast, Australian manufacturers pay a livable wage, must abide by strict OHS standards, and often do smaller production runs, all of which contribute to higher prices but also ensure quality, ethical practices, and sustainability in production.

Are Australian Manufacturers Just Greedy Or Rip Offs?

No not at all! Actually, it's quite the oppoiste!

A manufacturer can often get their product imported at a fraction of the cost, sell it at a fraction of the price, and still make more profit!

So when a manufacturer chooses to make their product here in Australia they are often sacrificing profits.
